Narrative
Geoffrey was allegedly of Flemish extraction and possibly kin to the Vicomtes of the Bessin area of Normandy. He held lands near Bayeux in the Bessin and also in the Channel Islands.
After Geoffrey of Anjou, husband of the Empress Maud, wrested Normandy from King Stephen in 1142, the Guernsey fief of the forfeited Vicomte of the Bessin (Ranulf of Bayeux, Earl of Chester) was divided between the Wakes and the Abbey of Mont St. Michel.
