Sir Robert held the office of Constable of Stirling Castle. He held the office of Scottish Ambassador to England. He held the office of High Chamberlain of Scotland between 1350 and 1357 and again from 1363 to 1364. In 1368 he had a royal charter granting Alloa to himself in exchange for Strathgartney.
