Narrative

Thomas Edward Ashby came from Tydewater, Virginia, and settled in the Shenandoah Valley along Beaverdam Run of Aquia Creek about 1710. He was an early explorer across the Blue Ridge Mountains into the Shenandoah Valley and Ashby's Gap (now located in WV) is named for him. He served as a Captain in the county militia and often served as a travelling companion for surveyors in the Blue Ridge. He owned a tavern at Ashby's Gap and a ferry across the Shenandoah River. His home was named Yew Hill.
