He fought in the Battle of Cul-Dreimhe in 561, where he defeated Diarmaid, High King of Ireland (head of the southern Ui Neill). In 562 he defeated the Irish Picts. In 563 he defeated the Leinsterman. He succeeded to the title of High King of Ireland joint in 565.
