'Capt. Thomas Carter likely was the first of the family to come to Virginia from England. According to WFT , Vol8, Family 570, He sailed from London, aboard the SAFETH on August 10, 1635 (date does not match birth date). By 1650 he was in Nansemond Co., Va. He bought 800 acres of land in Lancaster Co., on the Corotoman River, from Col. John Carter. By 1663, although as yet unmarried, he had a home in Lancaster county named "Barford" and was paying tithes on 20 people. He was a Captain in the VA Militia & member of Council of Burgess 1677. This Thomas Carter was also a Planter, merchant & tobacco trader. His plantation was called "Barford" in Lancaster Co., Virginia. Based upon WFT 18, family 1907, He likely was the 6th son of Anscell Carter, a merchant in the City of London. Charles fled England upon the beheading of King Charles I, coming to Virginia by 1650 and established Barford Plantation in Lancaster Co. It is believed his first wife and children died and he then married Katherine Dale, who, with her parents, had fled England when Cromwell took control. He married (1) Mary ANCELL-PARKHURST Abt. 1662 in St Johns, Bedfordshire, England. She was born Abt. 1635 in St Johns, Bedfordshire, England. He married (2) Katherine DALE 04 May 1670 in Christ Church Parish, Lancaster Co, Virginia, daughter of Edward DALE, Major and Diana SKIPWITH, Lady. She was born 04 May 1649 in Prestwold, Leicestershire, England, and died 10 May 1703 in Barford, Lancaster Co, Virginia. Charles served in the House of Burgesses; was Captain of Militia; was clerk of the County Court and also held other positions in VA. His will, dated 8-16-1700, is on file in Lancaster Co. Court House in VA. The personal estate was valued at 236 Pounds, which was a goodly sum, and included a : parcel of old Books, a silver drinking pot, tankard, and twelve silver spoons, beside the usual household and plantation furnishings of a man of class. Charles W. H. Warner, premiere historian and Carter researcher who has written numerous accounts of this family, says, "There definitely is a connection to Robert 'King' Carter, and it is believed Capt. Thomas Carter and 'King' Carter were first cousins - their fathers, Maj. Thomas Carter, Sr. and Col. John Carter, believed to be the sons of John and Bridget Benion Carter of Newgate Street, London." For additional information on his ancestry and life, see "The Descendants of Captain Thomas Carter," written by Joseph Lyon Miller, MD, published by C.J. Carrier Company, Harrisonburg, VA, 1972 (Written in 1912).'
