Narrative

Col John Campbell was a career military man in the British Army, stationed in many locations around the globe on behalf of the Empire. He met his wife while stationed in Paris. He fought in many of the major battles of the Peninsular War, including Busaco, Burgos (where he led one of the storming parties), Salamanca, Nivelle, Nive, Orthez, Toulouse, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo. He succeeded to command of the 42nd Highlanders at Quatre Bras, and was rewarded for his actions at Waterloo with the Cross of the Companion of the Bath, medals for Orthez, Toulouse and Waterloo, and the Russian Order of St Vladimir, along with the rank of Brevet Lieut-Colonel.
