The Hansons were a prominent Protestant family in Charles Co. John Hanson, progenitor in America was perhaps the son of Sir Robert Hanson of London, born sometime before 1754. He and his wife Mary had seven children: Robert, Benjamin, Mary, Anne, Sarah, John, and Samuel. John, Jr. married a Catholic, Elizabeth Hussey, d/o Judge Thomas Hussey and his second wife Joan, and from them the Catholic branch of the family descends; Thomas Hussey was s/o John Hussey of Harby in County Lincoln, England.
John and Elizabeth (Hussey) Hanson had four children: John (m Elizabeth Massey), Elizabeth (m Leonard Wheeler), Mary (m Wm Clements) and Eleanor who married William Hagan.
The most famous of the family was the John Hanson son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Story) Hanson: b 13 Apr 721, d 22 Nov 1783. He served as president of the Continental Congress at the end of the Revolutionary was and received Washington after the surrender of Cornwallis. His state is in statuary hall in the US Capitol. This John Hanson married Jane Contee of Prince George Co. Their son and grandson, both called Alexander Contee Hanson, are famous in their own right.
