George Hamblen's Will

The will of George Hamblen of Shelby County was probated in July of 1845. This will was signed by George on December 17, 1837. This will reveals that George was a wealthy man. It reads:

"I, George Hamblen Sr. of Shelby County, Kentucky, do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and from following, that is to say: "Item 1st—I give to my beloved wife widow Bartha Hamblen all my beds, bed clothes, wearing clothes and all clothing that belongs to me to dispose of as she may think proper and during her natural life my Negro woman Molly, my Negro man Jack and my Negro man Thomas. After her death the above named Negroes are to be sold on a credit of twelve months, the purchaser to give bond with approved security, the money to be equally divided between my eight children Elizabeth, Patsey, John, William, George, Piercy, Polly, and Frances.

"Item 2nd—I give to my daughter Elizabeth Drake the increase of my Negro woman Harriet and all the property and money I have given to her all which she has received, also her part of Molly, Jack, Thomas, to her and her heirs forever and no more out of my estate.

"Item 3rd—I give to my daughter Patsey Brim my Negro boy Abraham which she has in her possession with all the property and money I have furnished her with and thirty eight acres of land bought of Benjamin Hamblen and her part of Molly, Jack and Thomas during her natural life then to her child or children and no more out of my estate to them and their heirs forever.

"Item 4th—I give to my son John Hamblen the two Negroes he has received, Milly and Jane with all the money and property I have furnished him with and his part of Molly, Jack and Thomas and no more out of all my estate to him and his heirs forever.

"Item 5th—I give to my son William A. Hamblen all the land I purchased of Richard Taylor whereon he and my self now lives except five acres I sold to the member of Dover Church, leaving a balance of about two hundred and twenty acres. To Wm. my Negro girl Suckey, my Negro boy Isaac, his part of Molly, Jack and Thomas and all the balance of my property comprehending all my estate not herein otherwise appropriated to him and his heirs forever.

"Item 6th—I give to my son George Hamblen my Negro girl Minta which he has received with all the money and property he has in his possession and his part of Molly, Jack and Thomas and no more out of all my estate to him and his heirs forever.

"Item 7th—I give to Edmond C. Johnson who married my daughter Ann all the property and money I let him have that he now holds and no more of all my estate to him or his heirs forever.

"Item 8th—I give to my daughter Piercy Arnold my Negro boy Nicholas, my Negro girl Lucy and all the property and money I have furnished with and her part of Molly and Jack and Thomas and no more out of all my estate to her and her heirs forever.

"Item 9th—I give to by daughter Polly Law my Negro boy Russel, my Negro girl Margaret, all the property and money she has received of me and her part of Molly, Jack and Thomas and no more of all my estate to her heirs forever.

"Item 10th—I give to my daughter Frances Yeager my Negro Cuffie which she has received and all the property and money she has received of me. No more during the lifetime of Caddes B. Young (sic) at his death if she is the longest lived she is to have Pajah and her part of Molly, Jack and Thomas if my widow is still living she Frances as well as the balance (sic) of my children will wate (sic) until the death of my widow for their part of Molly, Jack, and Thomas and no more out of all my estate to her and her heirs forever.

"Item 11th—I and lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my son Wm. A. Hamblen and my friend William C. Price Executors of this my last will and testament hereby making all other or former wills and testaments by me heretofore made ______(page torn).
"In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 17th day of December 1837."
