He held the office of Scottish Ambassador to England in 1424, for the ransom of King James I. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Duc de Touraine [France, 1424] on 17 August 1424. He succeeded to the title of 5th Earl of Douglas on 17 August 1424. He held the office of a Regent of the Kingdom in 1437. He held the office of Lieutenant-General of the Kingdom in 1438.
