Memories of Aunt Jackie (daughter of Margaret):
Margeret did not dance or play any instrument, even though all the rest of the family did. Her dad Ensley played violin, Jim played banjo, John played mandolin and Myrtle played piano when she could get near one. They did not have a piano at home. Margaret married Dell Hamlin on her 23rd birthday. While they were courting, she asked Dell to teach her to drive. He had his first car by then. Their homes were about a two hour horseback ride apart, or a half day walk, so he was glad to get it. Margaret wrecked his new car on the curving hill near Woodbine. Dell never bought another car, always driving pickup trucks after that. Her father-in-law Add called her Gretty, and her brother Jim called her Sweetheart. Margaret used herbal remedies her dad had taught her for everything. She believed in dosing everybody with castor oil every spring. She delivered a stillborn son before Fred was born, and had two early miscarriages later, one between Calvin and Arnold, and again between Arnold and Jackie. She had worked the fields and done laundry her whole childhood, and she once told Jackie that getting married was just " trading one cornfield for another." Margaret did not drink or curse, and only read from the Bible. She would sit the kids around the stove at night to read to them, and she kept her snuff can handy beside her. While she was reading, son Fred would sneak the can of snuff and pass it along to his brothers and sister, and they would all sneak a chew. Nobody remembered them ever getting caught at it.
